It will take a long time to determine the full impact of Hurricane Sandy. The Highlands Region in New Jersey and Pennsylvania was particularly hard hit by destructive winds. While we focus on the impacts to people and the built environment, some notable destruction was visited upon natural areas.
The rocky Upper Bucks County woodlands are an iconic PA Highlands landscape. A recent hike along a proposed route of the PA Highlands Trail Network (PHTN) revealed a staggering number of 'blowdowns.' In Ringing Rocks County Park a portion of the trail was obliterated by downed beech, ash, oak and other hardwood trees.
Weather permitting there will be a December 2nd AMC hike on this stretch of the proposed PHTN trail route. Check back for details. In the meantime our thoughts go out to the many homeowners and businesses that have been harmed by the storm.
