Hopewell Furnace and Big Woods
Hopewell Furnace Superintendent Edie Shean-Hammond and Horse-Shoe Trail Conservancy members enjoying the trails in Hopewell Big Woods.
History lovers and people who enjoy the sensory pleasures of mature
Eastern Deciduous Forests
will enjoy visiting one of Southeastern Pennsylvania's truly special places.
Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site
is situated next to
French Creek State Park
in the Schuylkill Highlands, straddling the border of Berks and Chester counties. Both the state park and historic site are in the heart of what is known as
'The Hopewell Big Woods'
which is considered the largest contiguous stand of hardwood forest between Washington DC and New York City.
The PA Highlands Trail is envisioned to piggy-back onto the HorseShoe Trail in the Hopewell Big Woods.
